Gloucestershire Bowden Hall

Opinion

Bowden Hall has been in existence for over 200 years. Originally built in 1770, this grade two-listed Regency manor has been a hotel since the late 60’s. The house was still occupied as a family home until the early 1920’s.

Bowden Hall

It was for many years the home of the Birchall family. Major Dearman Birchall, a cotton merchant, had purchased the house from Lancashire. At the time he was a very important member of the small community of Upton St Leonards.

Despite several changes and refurbishments over the years, the hotel retains the charm and ambience of a country house. Within the hotel many original features can still be seen, such as the woodwork and fireplace in the main reception and the grand wooden staircase.

Within the stairwell is an extremely large window. William Morris designed this together with windows in the reception and Lakeside Suite foyer.

The grounds of the hotel consist mainly of parkland with many mature trees and a small lake. The hotel faces south, with superb views over the surrounding hills. Also within the grounds you will see the Orangery. As the name suggests, this conservatory was used to grow oranges. This too is a listed building with windows from ground floor to roof level. The Orangery was converted to a house during 1979.

The hotel is an ideal situation for that superb backdrop for your day
