| Wiltshire is where the West Country begins and where almost half of the county is designated an 'area of outstanding natural beauty'. In the midst of chalky uplands lie historic towns and picturesque villages, world-famous prehistoric sites, and some of England 's grandest stately homes and gardens.
Wiltshire is largely geared towards the grown-up visitor, but that's not to say that children are completely overlooked.
The great stone circle of Stonehenge needs no introduction and the various ancient landmarks in and around Avebury make for a veritable archaeological theme park. The most appealing countryside is along the valleys of the southern chalk streams - intimate scenery with stone or flint houses and sparkling rivers.
The northern parts have some quietly attractive drives and walks, especially around Marlborough . Running across the county, the restored Kennet & Avon canal has lots of scope for enjoyable boat trips or relaxing towpath walks. |
